Medical Conditions That Affect The Penis

There are many different conditions that can affect the penis, and as it is often the last thing that you want to talk about, I have included some general information here to help give you an idea about these conditions.

Often conditions relating to the penis can go untreated because there are feelings of embarrasment and sometimes guilt arising from anything that is wrong with the penis.

Are you suffering from Erectile Dysfunction?

This is one of the most embarrasing and sensitive conditions, and often admitting that there is a problem is half of the battle. Erectile dysfunction can have it's roots both in physical and psychological causes.

Any condition that interferes with the flow of blood through the body is bound to have a negative impact on a man’s sex life.

Diabetes, kidney diseases, chronic alcoholism and multiple sclerosis can all affect the flow of blood through the body and affect the penis and erections.

Medication for blood pressure or heart conditions are also detrimental to what is known as a healthy sex life. Physical injury to the penis, and surrounding area can also be a physical cause of erectile dysfunction.

Stress, anxiety, and depression are other major causes of temporary erectile dysfunction, especially in today’s world. A history of erectile dysfunction also triggers patterns of depression and inadequacy that lead to further sexual failures.

Premature ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is the most common sexual problem in men. An estimated 30 percent of all men are unable to control their ejaculation in most sexual encounters.

The results of this weakness on the physical side of sex tend to spill over into the psychological side, undermining confidence and self esteem and triggering patterns of depression.

Most of those suffering from premature ejaculation are younger men, who have less experience, but nearly every man has been unable to control himself at least once during his sex life.

It’s perfectly clear that inexperience is one of the biggest causes of premature ejaculation, followed by a weak PC muscle and a faster than normal neurological response in the pelvic muscles.

The PC muscle stands for the pubococcygeus muscle. This muscle acts as floor to the entire pelvic area of the body, it also controls orgasm and prolonged exercising helps men achieve orgasm without ejaculating.

Still, premature ejaculation can be prevented or treated by working out the PC muscle and bringing it under your control. Penis exercises like Kegels focus on ejaculation control for people who want to rid themselves of this unfortunate condition once and for all.

Curvature of the Penis

Most cases of curved penises are caused by a disease known as Peyronie’s. It was named after the brilliant XVII century French surgeon Francois de la Peyronie.

The diseases that was named after him is a rare disorder of the connective tissue that makes up part of the penis.

It involves the growth of fibrous plaques in the soft tissue of the penis that can, in time, bend the penis in one direction or another. The result is a curved penis that is not always suited for sex. Many men suffering from Peyronie’s complain about pain during intercourse.

The exact cause of this condition is still unknown. Some experts are convinced that Peyronie’s disease is inherited and many say that it is caused by injury to the internal cavity of the penis.

The only known treatments of this condition are surgery, oral medication (vitamin E) or penis exercises. However, surgery is an invasive technique with irreversible results that is not always successful, while Vitamin E brings only a small improvement and not to all men.

The best choice for anybody suffering from this condition is to try penis exercises that can straighten the penis, just as they can make it longer.

Curvature of the penis can be caused by other factors such as strenuous masturbation, or injury to the penis, but the exercises used to correct Peyronie's disease can be equally effective in treating curvature caused by other factors.

Impotency

Impotence is the inability of a man either to have an erection or to keep the penis erect long enough to have sexual intercourse.

This is a common problem affecting as many as 10 million men in the United States alone. By the time most men are 40 they have already experienced impotence at some time in their lives.

When just a single incident occurs, the best thing to do is forget about it. Problems arise when this difficulty starts occurring regularly.

Men afflicted with repeated impotence tend to be middle-aged and older, with such a condition most common in men 60 years of age and older. Regardless of the age, however, many men who have this problem can be treated successfully.

Impotence can result from a wide variety of problems. For example, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, injuries to the spinal column, and side effects from high blood pressure medicine are among the physical conditions that can lead to impotence.

An erection occurs when the nervous system activates a rapid increase in blood flow.

The vascular muscle in the spongy area becomes engorged with blood and outflow of blood is cut off.

Erection can be elicited by the so-called reflex erection as we see in spinal cord patients, or can be caused by psychogenic stimulation. In order to get an erection, the blood flow must increase and, at the same time,  the blood has to be prevented from leaving the penis.

With regular penis exercising, you can help to increase the bloodflow to the penis and this can be helpful in some cases of impotency.

Infertility

Data available over the past twenty years reveal that in approximately 30% of cases pathology is found in the man alone, and in another 20% both the man and woman are abnormal.

Therefore, the male factor is at least partly responsible in about 50% of infertile couples.

Infertility is usually defined as the inability to conceive after a minimum of one year of unprotected intercourse. Since most people are able to conceive within this time, physicians recommend that couples unable to do so be assessed for fertility problems.

It has been shown that the longer a couple remains subfertile, the worse their chance for an effective cure. In addition, many couples experience significant apprehension and anxiety after only a few months of failure to conceive.

In men, hormone disorders, illness, reproductive anatomy trauma and obstruction, and sexual dysfunction can temporarily or permanently affect sperm and prevent conception. Some disorders become more difficult to treat the longer they persist without treatment.

The most common identifiable cause of infertility in men is varicocele. This is a condition of enlarged veins in the scrotum that causes abnormalities in the temperature regulation of the testis. If this temperature is elevated by even one degree, sperm and testosterone production are adversely affected.

The good news though is that more than one-half of cases of male infertility can be corrected. Treatment may help a couple get pregnant through normal sexual intercourse. Even if you can't get pregnant in this way, you may not need expensive or invasive treatments to get pregnant.

If the man needs surgery to correct the problem that is causing his infertility, it can be an outpatient procedure. This means he doesn't have to stay in the hospital overnight, even if there is no way of conceiving naturally, there is always IVF treatment available as a last resort.

Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men between the ages of 15 and 34.

Most testicular tumors are discovered by patients themselves-either by accident, or while performing a self-examination on each testicle.

The usual presentation is of an enlarged, painless lump, although occasionally there can be pain. The lump typically is pea-sized, but sometimes it might be as big as a marble or even an egg.

Besides lumps, if a man notices any other abnormality- an enlarged testicle, a feeling of heaviness or sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum, a dull ache in the lower abdomen or groin, or enlargement or tenderness of the breasts--he should discuss it with a physician right away.

These symptoms can be caused by conditions other than cancer. But only a doctor can tell for sure, and it is critical to seek attention promptly.

Only 15 years ago, a diagnosis of testicular cancer was grim news, ten times as many patients died then as now.

Dramatic advances in therapeutic drugs in the last two decades, along with improved diagnostics and better tests to gauge the extent of the disease, have boosted survival rates remarkably. Now, testicular cancer often is completely curable, especially if found and treated early.
